Learn about cryptocurrency mining with this interactive blockchain demo
Learn about cryptocurrency mining with this interactive blockchain demo

In order to understand cryptocurrency you’ll need to grasp the fundamentals of blockchain. Luckily, someone made an interactive tutorial that not only explains the idea, but walks users through mining valid hashes with their CPUs.

Blockchain Demo overcomes part of the learning curve by showing you exactly what mining looks like. It’s a creative way to adapt a useless form of mining for educational purposes. You’ll need hardware like a miner — a computer built for the job — if you want to make any actual money.

We’re past the days of adapting an old computer for the job, entry-level units have six GPUs. The bare-bones miner costs about $300, but considering many manufacturers have a minimum order amount, sometimes in the range of 100 units, this isn’t a weekend hobby.

Credit: Blockchain Demo

Blockchain Demo is my attempt at demystifying the technology behind cryptocurrencies. It has a living blockchain, a peer-to-peer network, and a user tour.

Han’s tool guides you through the process of mining a block using the same type of ledger technology powering Bitcoin.

For a deeper dive into the concept, you can also check out the inspiration for Blockchain Demo in this video by Anders.

Learn about Bitcoin & Cryptocurrency

Learn about Bitcoin & Cryptocurrency
Crypto Bit cash Trading

In this World of today, people are more and more aware of what is going on in the financial world because of the bank crashes which occured in 2008, it had such massive implications on the Worlds money markets.

Today people are looking for safe places to keep their cash assests and for places which will offer better returns than those which traditional banking has to offer. Many small investors find it extremely difficult to find interest rates higher than 2 or 3 percent. With returns like this it is no wonder people are seeking better returns.

Some lucky people who are computer savvy have discovered new and inovative ways of investing small amounts of money which offer excellent returns over short periods of time. I am sure your next question will be, “What have they found ?”

It’s a digital currency that is called Bitcoin. Bitcoin was created in 2009 by an unknown person going by the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. His idea was to create an currency that was independent of any central authority. He was fed-up with how much control centralaized authorties had and how they were able to stop lending, cause crashes and gamble our money away. Today Bitcoin is known as “money 2.0” and holds the term “peoples money”

What’s all the fuss with Bitcoin?

If you are anything like me then you have probably been wondering what all the fuss is about with BitCoins.

I have to admit that around a year ago I was just curious, but never curious enough to make any effort to find out any more about it.

So if you are curious and:-

  • You know absolutely nothing about bit Coins
  • You’ve heard about Bit Coins but don’t own any
  • You already own a few you bought or aquired some time ago and want to do even more with them
  • You think it’s probably all a big scam
  • You think it’s the latest fad and only a short term bubble
  • You Don’t care about Bit coins

Here is a short Video All about Crypto Currency

well let me tell you this…

You owe it to yourself to discover as much as you can about Bitcoin!

Why? Good Question, The answer is that it’s turning every day main street men and women into millionaires !

In this article I will try to point out some reasons as to why you should not overlook this rapidly growing currency, why you still have time to get into bitcoin yourself and the best ways to start of your investment into Bitcoi.

What actually is a Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a virtual currency / digital token that can be stored and moved around on a network. It is also an online payment system.

Are Bitcoins Physical objects?

Bitcoins are not physical like paper money is, each unit inside of a bitcoin is an entry on a digital ledger. It’s not something you can hold in your hand.

How is the price of Bitcoins Set?

There is no single person that controls or sets the price of Bitcoins, the price of Bitcoins are set on the open market based on what people are willing to buy and sell for them. These prices are usually take place on exchanges, its very similar to how stock prices are set.

Whats the difference between Fiat money and Bitcoin? (Other than the de-centralization)

All Bitcoin transactions are kept on an open Ledger which is available to everyone. This is known as a blockchain and it cant be tampered with or altered. This blockchain technology makes Bitcoin different to regular Fiat money.

How many Bitcoins will there be in circulation?

There will only ever be a total of 21 million bitcoins in circulation. Fiat currency on the other hand gets printed all the time devaluing the entire currency. this means the money you hold today will be worth less tomorrow when more money is printed and out in circulation. This however is not the case with Bitcoin.

Can Bitcoin be Shut-down?

The bitcoin network is not central, there is no one to shut it down or demand information from its users.

Can anyone have a Bitcoin account?

Yes, anyone can have a Bitcoin account even if they dont have a passport, address or any other form of ID. All you need is your bitcoin details such as your password and pass key.

What is Crypto currency?

Cryoto currency comes in many forms and is basically not really money at all but a digital currency which other like minded people trade between themselves and like the regular money markets this causes the value of the digital currency to either raise or fall depending on the number of trades being done and the value at which the buyer is prepared to pay for a number of units of digital currency on that particular trade.

what different digital currencies are there?

At the time of writing there over 1300 different crypto currencies but topping my list of researches in to crypto currenies is the bitcoin, which currently (December 2017) has a market cap in excess of $55 billion.

Ethereum is reasonably close second with a market cap of approximately $25 billion,

Ripple approx ($6.8 billion),

Bitcoin Cash approx ($5.1 billion),

Litecoin approx ($2.3 billion),

NEM approx ($2.3 billion),

Dash approx ($1.4 billion),

Ethereum Classic approx ($1.4 billion) and

IOTA aprox ($1.3 billion).

The most well know is of course is the Bitcoin which is the most commonly traded by ordinary people rather than specialist traders dealing only in one or more of the

alternatives.

Who owns Bitcoin?

It is not owned by any individual or any banks, Bitcoin is a digital network. The creator of Bitcoin is named Satoshi Nakamodo. .

What is it that makes Bitcoin’s grow in value?

There are several varied reasons combined which will determine the value of Bitcoin at any point in time. To further expand on this you will find below what i believe are the main two factors effecting its growth on the open market:

1. The usability of the bitcoin – Bitcoin has over 250,000 merchants and the more Bitcoin is accepted Worldwide and used the more its value continues to increase.

2. Supply and demand – There will only be 21 million Bitcoins ever be generated, however the demand is increasing on a daily basis for them which is having a positive effect on the value of Bitcoin. There are other factors that influence the price of Bitcoin which are answered below, but basically the main factors are a few Government regulations, media influence, wider acceptance of the bitcoins, technological changes and advancements and finally, endorsements.

How Does Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin is an internet based digital currency which assures its long term financial independence. It is used and traded in many ways, including but not exclusive to using it on your smart phone or computer, many people treat this as like having their very own independent bank in their pocket.

Can Bitcoin be converted into a normal local currency or cash?

Yes, since bitcoin has evolved and entrepenours have developed applications for trading and using the currency you now can go to an ATM locally and buy Bitcoin or withdraw local currency in exchange for your bitcoins.

What is Bitcoin trading?

Trading simply means that you buy low and sell high. This is the same concept which is use in traditional money markets and has now been applied in Bitcoin trading, we have intelligent applications which monitors the value and trades 24/7 of the Bitcoin market and automatically captures when the Bitcoin value decrease or increases, these applications will then automatically buy and sells FOR YOU on YOUR behalf. This results in you making healthy profits on a daily basis.

Can You be paid in BITCOINS!

yes if you would like to be paid in this way and your employer or contractor is willing to pay you by this method, but it is quite rarely done.

We hope that this article has helped to make it a little easier for you to understand the basic principles of Crypto Bit Cash Trading and that you will follow us as we continue to pass on our knowledge and experience going forward.

Kodak Announces ‘KODAKCoin’ as Cryptocurrency Specifically for Photographers

Kodak Announces ‘KODAKCoin’ as Cryptocurrency Specifically for Photographers
KodakCoin New Cryptocurrency Bitcoin
Photo: Jakob Owens

Kodak is stepping into the world of cryptocurrency and the market likes what it sees. The company recently announced that it's joining forces with Wenn Digital to launch its own bespoke cryptocurrency called KODAKCoin. Using blockchain technology, KODAKCoin will not only help photographers get paid more efficiently, but aid in blocking copyright infringement.

Aimed both at individual photographers as well as agencies, KODAKOne is now a distribution platform that will “make it significantly cheaper and faster to register, move and sell digital images.” KODAKCoin will be used as the virtual currency on the platform, allowing photographers to be paid instantly for their work using the secure system. And what's more, photographers can register old and new images, track usage of their photographs, and take advantage of post-licensing image enforcement.

KODAKOne will be constantly searching the web to seek out possible infringement and then assist photographers in recouping expenses in these instances. It's an innovative way to take advantage of the security that blockchain technology offers—which is highly secure and difficult to alter—and marry that with the growing problem photographers have of keeping control over their work in the digital era.

“For many in the tech industry, ‘blockchain' and ‘cryptocurrency' are hot buzzwords, but for photographers who've long struggled to assert control over their work and how it's used, these buzzwords are the keys to solving what felt like an unsolvable problem,” Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke states. “Kodak has always sought to democratize photography and make licensing fair to artists. These technologies give the photography community an innovative and easy way to do just that.”

If the stock market is any indication, the public is already reacting positively to the new currency. According to Bloomberg, shares surged 119% to $6.80 at the New York Stock Exchange the afternoon of the announcement, which are huge gains for the company, which has seen their stock fall 70% over the last year.

KODAKCoin will launch their initial coin offering on January 31, 2018.

Japan's latest sensation is a cryptocurrency pop group

Japan's latest sensation is a cryptocurrency pop group

If you're starting a pop group in Japan, where giant rosters and virtual superstars are par for the course, how do you stand out? By tying yourself to something trendy -- and in 2018, that means cryptocurrency. Meet Kasotsuka Shojo (Virtual Currency Girls), a J-pop group where each of the eight girls represents one of the larger digital monetary formats. Yes, you're supposed to cheer for bitcoin or swoon over ethereum (what, no litecoin?). The group played its first concert on January 12th, and naturally you had to pay in cryptocurrency to be one of the few members of the general public to get in.

The group's first single, "The Moon and Virtual Currencies and Me," warns listeners about the perils of fraud and extols the virtues of good online security.

And yes, there's a reason for the exceptionally timely theme. Katsosuka Shojo is promoting the idea that cryptocurrency isn't a "tool of speculation," but rather a means of creating a "wonderful future." It helps that Japan is one of bitcoin's biggest markets, with legal recognition and one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges. There really is an audience for this, then.

The real question: how long will this last? If you think regular pop groups don't last long, imagine a band whose fate is intertwined with something as volatile as cryptocurrency. It could find a following... or it fizzle out the moment virtual cash becomes passé.

InsurePal, the world’s first social proof insurance platform, is proud to welcome Bitcoin pioneering evangelist, Charlie Shrem to its illustrious advisory board. Charlie Shrem joins InsurePal as business development advisor, bringing an unparalleled wealth of rich entrepreneur experience to the future of insurance on the blockchain.

“I’m excited to join the advisory team on this project, and our company, Crypto IQ, is getting involved as well,” Charlie declared. “InsurePal is a very interesting concept, and I like to get involved in blockchain projects that are not finance-related. This team has its past success. It has been involved with other companies

and has performed well. I believe we can be the bridge between crypto and non-crypto insurance, which will be a very interesting thing.”

As an advisor, Charlie has been instrumental in the successful launch of over a dozen blockchain startups and the initiation of numerous partnerships between crypto and non-crypto Enterprises. His recently founded media and advisory company, Crypto.IQ, boosts of a team of seasoned Wall Street veterans that aims to bring simplicity and clarity to the crypto industry. Same thing InsurePal will do for the insurance industry.

“InsurePal will bring this innovative concept of social proof and blockchain insurance to the people who have yet to be involved in crypto and provide an insurance solution for them,” Shrem said. “That is the most interesting part of it.”

World-class Team

Charlie Shrem and Crypto.IQ join a world-class team of experts, partnering to harness the power of social proofing on the blockchain. InsurePal’s next-generation peer-to-peer insurance platform solution reinvents the industry through social proof endorsements. The award-winning platform replaces the traditional – and often draconic – process of insurance coverage, offering not only a revolutionary new standard of coverage for the industry, but also bringing legitimacy to blockchain businesses.

Charlie will help InsurePal become a bridge between tradition and innovation that will shape the insurance industry moving forward.

Raising The Bar

Social proof endorsement allows both businesses and individuals access insurance coverage at a lower cost based on Trustscores. InsurePal’s Trustscore is a risk-aware measurement metric for ascertaining performance on the network. Endorsers are scored based on the performance of their endorsee.

At the prestigious d10e pitching contest in Ljubljana and Bucharest, InsurePal took home the top prizes indicating its resonance with the community and their backing of the platform’s bold reinvention of the industry.

Strategic Partnership

With cryptos expanding from mere speculative vehicles to real-world solution assets, InsurePal has signaled its intention to bring legitimacy to the crypto industry through strategic partnership. By synergizing with key players in the industry, the platform is poised to bridge the divide between cryptos and mainstream market, the first step towards which is the future-proofing of blockchain-based ventures.

Through its collaborative agreement with the first Internet of Agreements infrastructure platform, Mattereum, InsurePal will further the adoption of blockchain technology by providing insurance and arbitration for all business transactions on the blockchain

Sold Out Presale

InsurePal is also pleased to announce that its whitelist presale has successfully reached its hard cap and has now ended. 70% (140,700,000) of IPL tokens were sold, raising $12 million for the further development of the platform. The public is invited to join its public token crowdsale on January 16th and be a part of the future of insurance on the blockchain.

You can use YouTube as a tool to share your information with customers, and engage with potential buyers and customers.

Webyellowpages.tv can help you use Youtube to your best viral advantage in getting more leads for sales of your goods.

With social media contacts not posting enough on the social site i.e. posting irregularly or one or two times a week usually isn't really enough to remain on the minds of your social media following to ensure that you'll be their main source in their time of need. So, it is best to rfrequently supply them with content that fulfills their demands and also interests (material they can relate to or perhaps speak for or against), instead of sending them a lot of non-benefit driven promos.

Also it is important with Social Media followers not to placing them on the back burner. Not responding to your social media queries or pertinent remarks is a BIG blunder. Why not to do this is very easy to see a prompt response is a basic expectation of your potential social media customers and patrons. If a patron calls your workplace with a question, you should recognize they by nature don't like to be kept waiting for very long to don't do it. Do not place your fans off and on hold. Be diligent by replying to your social media fans' questions both on and offline to make a positive connection with your social media friends.

Don't have an absence of Imagination. Competitors are fierce in the social media marketplace. To make it through, you need to go past the norm with innovation or you take a chance on becoming outdated. So be innovative - get your social media contact's to focus on you via being funny, suprising and motivational, as well as even giving them deals they cannot reject. Offer them the opportunity to ask appropriate questions, jar their imagination, awe them, as well as startle them with something different.

How to Make Money on the Internet Using Bitcoin

How to Make Money on the Internet Using Bitcoin
Make Money Using Bitcoin Banner

Are we Trying to Sell Something?

In this series of articles we explore how people make money on the Internet. We will attempt to give an objective view on every subject we investigate – we have no affiliate relationship to anyone specific mentioned in this series. Don’t be surprised if we conclude that this subject might not be a good way to make money. All opinions expressed here are just that – our opinions.

Crypto Exchange Large Discount

Bitcoin and a Bit of History

BitCoin, simply put, is decentralized digital currency, or cryptocurrency. They can be sent from person to person through the Internet, making fees lower because there are no middlemen such as banks or clearinghouses. Anyone can purchase these funds through Internet exchanges like BitCoin Classic or BitCoin XT, just to name a couple.

READ: How to Make Money Trading Altcoin

This currency was developed in 2009 by Japanese developer(s) Satoshi Nakamoto. There is a swirl of mystery because it is unsure who this is. There have been claims that this is one person or a group of people, but no one is really sure. Some research suggests that companies Like Samsung, Nokia and others had something to do with this currency. Personally, this leads a little doubt about BitCoin because people, in general, want to know that something is real and where it came from. A name is just a name until you can put a person or persons behind it. It only hurts the exchange to mystify the creator or creators.

How Is Bitcoin Used?

Make Money Using Bitcoin Network

When purchased or mined, BitCoin can virtually be used similarly to your currency through any payment online service that accepts this currency, including businesses and person-to-person exchanges. There are claims that this currency can transcend to “anything that can exist,” as expressed by Craig Wright, the person that was first thought to be Satoshi Nakamoto. This means that you will be able to shop with them in day-to-day transactions. Some BitCoin users already do this. There are stores and shops that take this currency, as well as a few Internet sites. There are also places on the Internet where you can gamble with them, trade them, purchase them, or pay for commodities with them.

How Can You Make Money Using Bitcoin?

Aside from gaming, as mentioned above, there are quite a few of other ways that can but BitCoins in your wallet. Entrepreneurs have been brainstorming to get into the BitCoin market one-way or the other. There are several ways to produce BitCoins that they have found:

Affiliate Bitcoining

One such way is to build your own website and teach courses about BitCoins for a nominal fee. There is also the option of placing BitCoin advertisements on your own website where you get a small fee when others access the ad through your site.

Faucets

Faucets for BitCoins can be more than just a game once you know how to use them. Setting up a faucet can be found in tutorials on YouTube.

Gambling

Of course, you can always take a chance and gamble with BitCoins but unless you understand that you can lose just as well as any other currency and if you plan on using BitCoins it is better to stay away from that. There are odds in gambling with BitCoins, just like any other currency.

There are even faucets that you can just hit a ‘claim’ button on that will give you free Satoshi after a waiting for a certain amount of time. The two I chose to sign up for have a waiting period of 15 and 20 minutes before I can tap the button again. Of course, Satoshi that can be harvested from some of these free sites but there are many that you will never be able to withdraw from. I do not hold out any hope of gaining from these faucets. Signing up is more about research and satoshi from these sites are like picking up pennies, anyway.

Analysis

There are websites that will micro-pay in satoshi for small analytical tasks. This is similar to MechanicalTurk at Amazon.

Make Money Using Bitcoin Used

Auto Trading

Another passive option is to use bots that will automatically trade, for you. The convenience of letting a BitCoin bot trade for you seven days a week, 24 hours a day is as passive as it can get. There is a market for trading the BitCoin, so this is another way to make money if you understand the core of the stock market and the concept of supply and demand.

Mining

Originally, mining for BitCoins was the main source of building the market for BitCoins. Since there is only 30% of the total 21 million left to mine, other options to add to your wallet had to be found. Since BitCoins are treated as currency, the concept of loaning with a fee is also a way to make money. Banks give loans to charge interest and make money. Following that model is pretty easy to do.

But Watch Out….

After researching the many types of ways to accumulate wealth, there are a couple types of websites to steer clear of. Any website that wants a plug-in added to your computer should be a red flag. There is just too much of a risk that your computer will be infected or hacked.

Is Bitcoin Currency Safe And How To Store Bitcoins?

The way BitCoins are stored is a “wallet” that you can have on your computer or cloud storage. This is similar to a bank account online. It is with a critical eye that anyone can say for sure that BitCoins are safe or secure. Breaches have occurred by unsecured wallets, not at the blockchain. Make sure your password is able to protect what you have in your BitCoin wallet. Make sure you never share it and it is strong. There are several different ‘wallets’ available. There is the paper wallet, mobile wallets, desktop wallets, online wallets, hardware wallets and USB wallets. They have varying security, based on your decision and price range.

How Does A Bitcoin Wallet Work?

There are some variations of this, but a BitCoin wallet is simple to set up. It takes a few pieces of your information but is relatively secure, based on your password. Once the account is set up, the wallet becomes a text file that is specific to you. It is protected by encryption through the browser you use. This is simply like opening your very own bank because you are the only one that knows how much you have in your account and the encryption stops everyone else from accessing the account. Wallets online are usually stored in the online cloud and still there is no way someone can access it unless your sign in protocols are weak or you shared the information. The wallet offered through Blockchain is connected to its namesake to look up your account when you log in and there is no need to download the blockchain at all. No one can view your account balance, addresses you have in the wallet, and transactions can only happen when you make them. No one is able to make any transaction except you. When your wallet is saved in the cloud there is no way that anyone can steal it. You don’t even have to use the blockchain.com website.

What Is A Blockchain?

Make Money Using Bitcoin Blockchain

Basically, the blockchain is a list of transactions concerning BitCoins. The problem here is that in order to use BitCoin, you will need to download the blockchain. This can be a problem because the blockchain is so long and takes up the memory of the user’s computer. Unless you decide to save it in the cloud, there will be many users that will be unable to access their BitCoins except by leaving their wallet in the cloud. Since the blockchain has been in place since the inception of BitCoins in 2009, there is a pretty good chance that your computer will not be able to hold the Blockchain at all. Wallets can, however, be used to house the Blockchain. A better option here is to use the cloud to keep it in. Another problem, there is no central database to house this. From this perspective, there is no known regulation. The only option is the BitCoin wallet. Of course, this is one of the solutions at present, unless you want to purchase storage beyond the capacity of your computer. To sum up what a Blockchain is, think of it as the checkbook register or ledger that everyone uses when using BitCoins.

What Is A Bitcoin Miner?

This started with algorithms (mathematical equations or processes) that could be easily answered, producing BitCoins. Of course, over time, answering these algorithms has become more difficult. Some people have grouped together to solve these equations and receive BitCoins based on their input to solve them. In some cases, people purchase mining software. There have been 14 million BitCoins mined with a limit of 21 million in existence. Since that represents 70%, realistically, mining is a harder process than thought. Mining was designed to be difficult, which limits the amount found. By 2140, miners will end up being dependent on transaction fees, based on the projection of the last BitCoin to be found.

What Are The Risks Of Bitcoin?

Depending on how you use BitCoins, and the market, they are similar to stock markets. The risk here is that BitCoins can vary over the course of time. BitCoin value can and does fluctuate. Of course, as previously stated, the security of BitCoins is as secure as your password but there has not been a problem with the BitCoin blockchain. They are also not a common use of currency. There are many places that look at the BitCoin and refuse it because their governments do not recognize the value. In order for governments to recognize this medium, there have to be certain criteria.

Another risk is the volatility of the market of BitCoins. At the beginning, there wasn’t a market so there wasn’t a cost. This allowed people to collect them, like Craig Wright. Supply and demand determine the cost.

Right now in the US, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) monitors any converted BitCoins to USD because banks report it. Of course, the problem we have here is that the government takes the stand that BitCoins are not legal tender and cannot be considered real because the population does not use it as a whole. Otherwise, the government would make policies and rules to govern this form of currency. What makes this more difficult for governments is that the BitCoin is used worldwide and cannot be tracked in usual ways, online.

To be fair, there have been rumors that just aren’t true about this system of currency. The idea that this is a Ponzi scheme is just not true. A Ponzi scheme has to do with the payment to older shareholders by using the money from new shareholders, in substitution of profits. This does not make any sense, since this has no centralization, like a bank, it is just not possible.

There have been rumors that drug dealers use BitCoin and that the system has been hacked. These are just rumors. What isn’t a rumor is that money can be taken when the website has been attacked by hackers, not your BitCoin wallet. There is always going to be a downside to something that is not widely understood. BitCoins are no different. We all need to explore and research for information to make the best decision possible.

The BitCoin has been scrutinized because they are not considered legal tender in many jurisdictions. This is true because it has been restricted or banned for use in some countries. There are many governments that are looking into how or if they want BitCoins regulated.

When looking at the BitCoin era, this currency has been off to a slow start. This form of currency is still in its childhood with the potential to survive and thrive, if and when it is accepted. The software is still in development to make it better by developing better security and accessibility. Time will tell. There are some websites that give you the option to learn by giving you a simulated account before if you are unsure of the BitCoin cycle. Whether this technology survives or sinks, look up a website where you can use a simulation to see if this is something you can understand and get accustomed to. This may or may not be the next step for all of us. It is definitely better to be prepared, just in case.

In Conclusion

If you want to sell a product or service, BitCoin is a viable alternative to normal dollars. But beware, BitCoin is an attractive option for people in need of an unregulated currency. Many pyramid schemes deal in Bitcoin as sole means of payment. Their promises to get rich quick are tempting and will more often than not cost you.

Unfortunately our world economy is based more and more on virtual pillars – in Bitcoin’s case the fact that the brain wallet password cannot easily be broken. Keep in mind that any technology can suffer a disruption. In fact technology begs disruption. We don’t want our financial system to suffer if the unthinkable happens and BitCoin is breached. Might this new generation of learning processor contribute to the coming disruption?

Let the buyer beware. Cryptocurrencies are still in its Wild West days, keep your head low pardner.

How to get crypto-currencies rates and more in Google Sheets

How to get crypto-currencies rates and more in Google Sheets
The CRYPTOFINANCE function on Google Sheets.

Join CRYPTOFINANCE Telegram group. A place to ask questions, share usage tips and propose cool features.

Raison d’être

Keeping track of your crypto-currency portfolio can be challenging. There are a few services out there, but nothing beats the flexibility of a spreadsheet.

Google Sheets is a very convenient spreadsheet tool. But while we can get the current Bitcoin exchange rate with theGOOGLEFINANCE("BTCUSD") function, other crypto-currencies and information (market cap, volume, etc) are not available.

The CRYPTOFINANCE() function, available as a Google Sheets Add-On, uses the coinmarketcap API to returns the rates, market cap, volume, change, total supply and rank.

I announced it on Twitter and people started to like it and asking for more features.

The initial announcement Tweet.

1. Go to the “Add-ons” menu, and click on “Get add-ons”.

2. On the Add-ons panel, search for “cryptofinance”, click on “+ FREE” to install it.

3. Choose under which account you want to install the Add-on.

4. CRYPTOFINANCE needs to connect to an external API and customize your sheet menu, click on “Allow”.

5. Make sure the add-on is activated in your sheet:

  1. Go to Add-on > CRYPTOFINANCE > Help
  2. Click on View in store , then click on Manage and check Use in this document:

And that’s it! From there the =CRYPTOFINANCE() function is available on any new spreadsheet you create.

Get all of CoinMarketCap data in a single sheet:

Created a new sheet, name it cryptodata, then on cell A1 type the formula:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("COINMARKETCAP")

This will create as many rows as there are coins tracked on CoinMarketCap, about 1,300 as of now. From there you can just reference these data from your portfolio sheet like this:

=cryptodata!E2 (this will show BTC price)

Note that the order of coins may change at each refresh, as they are sorted by marketcap. Here is how to make your references so that they are sticky:

=INDEX(cryptodata!A1:Z, MATCH("bitcoin",cryptodata!A1:A,0), 5)

Here is how it works, in order:

  1. MATCH will search for bitcoin in the sheet cryptodata on the column A and return the matching row number.
  2. INDEX will look at the cryptodata sheet and return the value that is at the row where bitcoin is, and at the column 5. Column 5 is where the price is, you can change it to 8 for marketcap info, etc.

You can show the prices in a 3rd currency (in addition to USD and BTC), examples:

  • With Ether: =CRYPTOFINANCE("COINMARKETCAP", "ETH")
  • With South African Rand: =CRYPTOFINANCE("COINMARKETCAP", "ZAR")

You can show only the top N coin (by marketcap) with the 3rd argument:

  • Top 10: =CRYPTOFINANCE("COINMARKETCAP", "", 10)
  • Top 100 with Ether as 3rd currency: =CRYPTOFINANCE("COINMARKETCAP", "ETH", 100)

Get exchange rates

Call the function with =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX/YYY") where XXX is the origin currency symbol (eg. BTC , ETH , DASH , etc.) and YYY is the destination currency (eg. USD , EUR , GBP , etc.)

  • All origin currencies are available (over 1,200), as listed on CoinMarketCap Currency listing.
  • 31 fiat destination currencies are available, along with Bitcoin and Ethereum, as a destination currency: AUD, BRL, CAD, CHF, CLP, CNY, CZK, DKK, EUR, GBP, HKD, HUF, IDR, ILS, INR, JPY, KRW, MXN, MYR, NOK, NZD, PHP, PKR, PLN, RUB, SEK, SGD, THB, TRY, TWD, USD, ZAR.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD") returns the current rate of Bitcoin in US Dollar, same thing as calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "price").
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("ETC/EUR") returns the current rate of Ethereum Classic in Euro, same thing as calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("ETC/EUR", "price").
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("DASH/CAD") returns the current rate of Dash in Canadian Dollar, same thing as calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("DASH/CAD", "price").
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/BTC") is useless and returns its input, 1 BTC = 1 BTC.

Get market cap

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX/YYY", "marketcap") to get the market cap of the XXX currency in the YYY currency. By default if YYY is not provided USD will be used.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "marketcap") will return the Bitcoin market cap in US Dollar. This is similar to calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "marketcap") .
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("ETH/EUR", "marketcap") will return the Etherum market cap in Euro.

Get 24h volume

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX/YYY", "volume") to get the volume in the last 24 hours for the currency XXX in the currency YYY . By default if YYY is not provided USD will be used.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("LTCEUR", "volume") will return the LiteCoin 24h volume in Euro.
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "volume") will return the Bitcoin 24h volume in US Dollar. Similar to calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "volume") .

Get total supply

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX/YYY", "total_supply") to get the total supply for the currency XXX in the currency YYY . By default if YYY is not provided USD will be used.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "total_supply") will return the total supply of Bitcoin in US Dollar. Similar to calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "total_supply") .
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/EUR", "total_supply") will return the total supply of Bitcoin in Euro.

Get available supply

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX/YYY", "available_supply") to get the available supply for the currency XXX in the currency YYY . By default if YYY is not provided USD will be used.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "available_supply") will return the total supply of Bitcoin in US Dollar. Similar to calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTCUSD", "available_supply") .
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/EUR", "available_supply") will return the total supply of Bitcoin in Euro.

Get maximum supply

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX", "max_supply") to get the maximum supply for the currency XXX.

Example:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "max_supply") will return the maximum supply of Bitcoin, which is 21000000.0.

Get change percentage

Call the function=CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX", "change", "PERIOD") to get the percentage change over the period PERIOD in USD. PERIOD can take 3 values: 1h (1 hour), 24h (24 hours) and 7d (7 days). If no PERIOD argument is given, the default is 24h .

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "change") will return the change percentage of Bitcoin over the last 24 hours in USD. Similar to calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "change", "24h")
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("ETH", "change", "1h") will return the change percentage of Ethereum over the last hour in USD.
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("DASH", "change", "7d") will return the change percentage of Dash over the last 7 days in USD.

Get currency rank

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX", "rank") to get the currency XXX rank, based on its market cap, as returned by Coinmarketcap.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "rank") will return 1 (as of May 2017). This means Bitcoin has the biggest market cap among all crypto-currencies (according to Coinmarketcap).

Get currency full name

Call the function =CRYPTOFINANCE("XXX", "name") to get the currency XXX full name, as returned by Coinmarketcap.

Examples:

  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC", "name") will return Bitcoin.
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BCC", "name") will return BitConnect.
  • =CRYPTOFINANCE("BCH", "name") will return Bitcoin Cash.

Get global statistics

Use the special symbol GLOBAL to get aggregated statistics across all crypto-currencies. Available statistics and how to call CRYPTOFINANCE is as follow:

  • Total coin market cap: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "total_marketcap") (returned in US Dollar)
  • Total 24h volume: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "total_24h_volume") (returned in US Dollar)
  • Bitcoin percentage of market cap: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "bitcoin_percentage_of_marketcap")
  • Number of active crypto-currencies: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "active_currencies")
  • Number of active assets: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "active_assets")
  • Number of active markets: =CRYPTOFINANCE("GLOBAL", "active_markets")

How to refresh rates

Your sheet should auto-refresh each time you open it. But this is rather uncertain and will not refresh if the time interval between each open is too short. Once open your sheet should refresh (again, not 100% sure) about each 2min for about 10min. These behaviours are Google Sheets defaults and CRYPTOFINANCE has no control over them.

Here is how to setup a manual refresh trigger for your sheet:

  1. Input the number 0 into cell A1
  2. Make the 4th argument to all your CRYPTOFINANCE function call a locked reference to cell A1. If you don’t have 2nd or 3rd arguments, just make them an empty string "" .
  3. Change the content of the cell A1 to refresh the rates. This works because Google Sheets will see the function CRYPTOFINANCE has an argument (the 4th) that changed and will force the refresh.

For example:

If your function call was:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/EUR")

your function call becomes:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/EUR", "", "", $A$1)

If your function call was:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "change")

your function call becomes:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "change", "", $A$1)

Tips: Make the content of A1 a function that update itself reasonably regularly, like =GOOGLEFINANCE("USDEUR"), to have the sheet always up to date.

Get historical price data

Extending from price syntax, you can get a pair the market average price at a historical date with the following syntax:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("BTC/USD", "price", "2014-12-25")

The last argument, the date, must be a 10 characters long string following the format YYYY-MM-DD. Where the year is written in 4 digits, then the month in 2 digits (add a padding zero for months January to September), then the day in 2 digits (add a padding zero for 1st to 9th). Each group being separated by a single hyphen -.

If no price data is available for the date, 0 is returned. The prices returned are the close prices at end of day GMT, or end of hour if specified.

You can prepend an exchange name, to return not the market average but this exchange price. 77 exchanges are supported, you can find the list here, along with their supported pairs.

Example getting Kraken BTC/USD price for November 2nd 2015:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "price", "2015-11-02")

Using Google Sheets TODAY() function:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "price", TEXT(TODAY(), "yyyy-mm-dd"))

With a specific time:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "price", "2015-11-02@15:00")

Only rounded hour timestamp will work. Specifying a minute other than 00 will almost always return the same as 00. The time is set on GMT timezone.

Referencing cells to build the timestamp:

Say A1 contains BTC , A2 contains 2016–10–22 and A3 contains 15:00.

First make sure to format A2 and A3 in plain text, go to Format > Number > Plain text to do this. Then, call:

=CRYPTOFINANCE(A1 & "/USD", "price", A2 & "@" & A3)

Other data are available: open, high, low, close and volume info:

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "open", "2015-11-02@19:00")

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "high", "2015-11-02@19:00")

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "low", "2015-11-02@19:00")

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "close", "2015-11-02@19:00"), same as =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "price", "2015-11-02@19:00").

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "volume_from", "2015-11-02@19:00")

=CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD", "volume_to", "2015-11-02@19:00")

Get blockchain info for Bitcoin

Get recommended transaction fees

All returned values are in satoshis per byte. Data are from the Earn.com Bitcoinfees API.

Fastest: =CRYPTOFINANCE("BLOCKCHAIN:BTC", "fee") , same as calling =CRYPTOFINANCE("BLOCKCHAIN:BTC", "fee", "fastest").

Half-hour: =CRYPTOFINANCE("BLOCKCHAIN:BTC", "fee", "half_hour") . The fee that will confirm a transaction within half an hour (with 90% probability).

Hour: =CRYPTOFINANCE("BLOCKCHAIN:BTC", "fee", "hour"). The fee that will confirm a transaction within an hour (with 90% probability).

Get current data from a specific exchange

Note: See above “Get historical price data” for exchange specific historical data

In a nutshell, call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:BTC/USD") to get the current Bitcoin price in US Dollar.

All information are returned from the Kraken public API. All ticker information available can be retrieved.

In the following examples, XXX is the origin currency symbol (eg. BTC , ETH , DASH , etc.) and YYY is the destination currency (eg. USD , EUR , GBP , etc.).

Only currencies traded on Kraken are available. Both XBT and BTC symbols can be used.

  • Get a currency pair exchange rates

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "ask") to get the ask price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "bid") to get bid price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "open") to get today’s opening price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "closed") to get the last trade closed price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "low", "today") to get today’s lowest price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "low", "last_24h") to get the lowest price over the last 24 hours.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "high", "today") to get today’s height price.

Call =CRYPTOFINANCE("KRAKEN:XXX/YYY", "high", "last_24h") to get the highest price over the last 24 hours.
